Jonathan A. Cook has a B.A. from Harvard College and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He is the author of Inscrutable Malice: Theodicy, Eschatology, and the Biblical Sources of “Moby-Dick” (2012), Satirical Apocalypse: An Anatomy of Melville’s “The Confidence-Man” (1996) and has published numerous articles and reviews on the writings of Melville, Hawthorne, Poe, Irving, and other nineteenth-century American authors; he is also the editor of the Barnes & Noble Classics edition of Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd (2005). Having taught at several colleges and universities on the East Coast, he is now chair of the English Department at Middleburg Academy and an adjunct professor at Lord Fairfax Community College. He lives in Sterling, Virginia.
